Kate's Bellybutton Lint Collection

I used to think blogs were self-indulgent navel gazing, but now I'm not so sure. From a practical standpoint, they're great for keeping up with friends, especially when you're awful about keeping in touch (like me). I know most people could probably care less what I think or do in a given week. For everyone else, this blog's for you! Enjoy my collection of hand-picked navel lint!

Animated electronic vest

Here is a quick video of a vest I made with an EL wire animation on the back. I took an electronics class at the Crucible and made a driver for it which surprisingly worked, but looked like a huge afro of wires. I succumbed and bought the CAT-09 driver from Cool Neon which is far more compact than the monstrosity I assembled!

I wish I could bring this home to show the folks, but the TSA would probably flip. I don't want to end up like Star Simpson.

Halloween 2008

Halloween was good this year... Lots of parties to attend! Genentech had a spooky lunch and costume party on Friday. They decked out one of the lecture halls with gravestones, cobwebs, and coffins bearing skeletal employees. I wore my circuit suit and brought some extra costume supplies to share with coworkers. Friday night I went with a friend to the NIMBY fundraiser held in a very difficult to find warehouse. Their original warehouse caught on fire - someone's sculpture probably exploded though I didn't get the details. When the fire department showed up they weren't happy with the types of projects they found and decided to close the operation down. Now NIMBY is raising money for a new space. The costumes I saw at the party were phenomenal, but you'd expect no less from a group of industrial artists. There were Borg, and people with sawblades embedded in their skulls; Van Gogh showed up with a bloody ear bandage; a wonderful Harpo Marx character honking his horn; Rorschach from Watchmen up in the DJ booth. Finally on Saturday night I helped Scott with his annual party. Partying with old friends was a relaxing way to end the chaotic weekend. Pictures below - I dressed up as an imaginary anime character dubbed "Spider Princess Nine".
